State of Emergency as Hurricanes Helen and Milton Slam Florida

Hurricanes Helene and Milton caused extensive damage across several states, with Florida bearing the brunt. Hurricane Milton’s destructive winds, flooding, and storm surges left severe impacts on infrastructure, with 34 counties and one tribal nation in Florida declared disaster areas.

At its peak, Milton left approximately 3.2 million residents without power, which was eventually reduced to around 17,000 still affected. Hurricane Helene, impacting several southeastern states, contributed to widespread power outages, home and property damage, and increased debris, creating complex recovery needs.

In response, FEMA has committed over $1.8 billion in federal assistance to aid affected areas.

Of this, Florida residents impacted by Hurricane Milton have received more than $54 million in FEMA assistance. The funding supports essential items, temporary housing, and repairs to storm-damaged homes. Additionally, FEMA has mobilized over 4,400 personnel to aid in on-the-ground recovery efforts, coordinating with local officials, conducting damage assessments, and providing support through Disaster Recovery Centers. These centers offer residents resources to assist with applications for federal aid and other recovery needs.
